Propers of Saints
SS Peter and Paul (June 29)
Byrd, William, Mass propers for the Feast of SS Peter and Paul EMP0661 £4.00
SSATTB Scoring legend Mass Propers ISMN M-2056-0661-9
For the two feasts of St Peter, this and St Peter's Chains, Byrd provided the only 6-voice Propers in his great Gradualia - an obvious homage to the Roman Catholic Church, to which he remained loyal despite the very real dangers for Catholics in England at the time. The music is grand, as befits its intention.
Hassler, Hans Leo, Tu es Petrus EMP1305 £2.00
SATB Scoring legend Motet general ISMN M-2056-1305-1
This is one of the 5-voice pieces from Hassler’s Cantiones Sacrae, given here as found in the great collection Sacri concentus of 1601 (an enlarged second edition was published in 1612). The text is of course from Matthew 16.
Palestrina, Giovanni Pierluigi da, Tu es Petrus EMP0213 £3.75
SSATBB Scoring legend ISMN M-2056-0213-10
One of Palestrina's best-known pieces, but one of the many which are actually in high clefs and need transposing. The piece is therefore offered transposed down a fourth for SSATBaB.
Richafort, Jean, Quem dicunt homines EMP0227 £2.00
SATB Scoring legend Respond (Manuscript edition) ISMN M-2056-0227-7
Scarlatti, Alessandro, Tu es Petrus EMP0401 £3.75
SATB SATB bc Scoring legend Communion ISMN M-2056-0401-1
We once described this as a 'Catholic Bach Motet' - double choir, complex polyphony, a real discovery for the competent chamber choir.
