A simple but effective setting of verses from Ps. 95, from Croce's 4-part motets of 1597. The collection was obviously intended for 'normal' church choirs, such as the parish choir at S. Maria Formosa, where Croce was a priest. The scorings are mostly 'ad aequales', i.e. in 'close-together' clefs allowing for transposition up or down according to the singers available.

This attractive piece from Croce's Cantiones Sacrae is also preserved in a manuscript in the library of the Basilica di San Marco in Venice, now kept at the Fondazione Levi. It is a setting of the opening of Psalm 17, in the version in the Gallican Psalter (cf Andrea Gabrieli Psalmi Poenitentiali). The liturgical use is somewhat obscure; it is, however, noteworthy that Giovanni Gabrieli also set the same text in his 1597 collection.

The madrigal “Godi, felice seno” is a welcome addition to the repertoire of large-scale secular pieces. It was published in Croce’s Quarto libro di madrigali a cinque e sei voci of 1607. Both the clearly made-to-measure text and the unusual scale of the work (12 parts disposed in three choirs a 4) suggest a lavish celebratory occasion. Mention of the Rhine and the Alpine regions in the text is evidently related to the alliance contracted in 1603 between Venice and the Swiss so-called Grisons (“Grey”) League. By the terms of the treaty, the Swiss would furnish 7000 troops to Venice in case of need. The piece was no doubt performed on the date of signing the treaty, September 24 1603, in the Ducal Palace, probably in the chamber of the Senato.

This very beautiful piece by Giovanni Croce is a setting of one of the Antiphons sung on the first Sunday in Lent (AM 342) - but also part of the prayer spoken by the Priest during the Offertory of the Mass. The text is thus of a penitential character: With humble spirits and contrite hearts may we be accepted by Thee, O Lord: and may our sacrifice be such that it be acceptable to Thee this day, and be pleasing to Thee, O Lord God. The piece was printed in a collection published by Grandi, Motetti a cinque voci (sic) in 1620.

I have been unable to find either a liturgical place or any other setting of this text which is obviously for the Assumption. I suppose it to have been composed for a celebration at one of the Scuole Grande in Venice, for which Croce was for many years in charge of the music. The motet provides for other feasts by giving an alternative text 'in honore beati N' etc.

This only four-choir mass by Croce was apparently written at the request of Archduke Ferdinand, later Emperor Ferdinand II, who met Croce while in Venice in 1598. A parody, whose source has not yet been identified, it is a magnificent piece whose ideal scoring would seem to be (I) a vocal choir SATB, (II) solo Alto/Tenor and three trombones, (III) solo Baritone and three higher instruments, the top one probably a cornett, (IV) solo Alto and three low instruments such as curtal/dulcian. However, all but the highest and lowest parts are capable of being sung, and our edition provides underlay for all parts. A text found in no other setting, its belligerent - indeed pugnacious - character makes it apparent that it was written either for the annual Lepanto commemoration, or - most likely - to celebrate the Habsburg victory at Sisak in 1593. The source collection, Croce's first book of double-choir motets of 1594, was dedicated to Raimondo Della Torre, the Ambassador to Venice of the Holy Roman Empire. Here offered as a set of parts (each choir consisting of cornett, 2 sackbuts and bass sackbut or curtal/dulcian) to be played with the voices.

One of the many Responsories hidden among Croce's output, possibly composed for extra-liturgical use at one of the Scuole Grande of Venice. This happens to be a Tenebrae Responsory, one of four anthologised by Argilliano in 1612, although the piece was originally published in the 1594 double-choir motets. Argilliano provided a 4-voice setting of the (Roman) verse which is missing in all Croce's Responsories.
